Derived from short biennial herbs with heart-shaped leaves and soft flowers the name Clary Sage is derived from the Latin word for clear because of its ability to cleanse and calm. During the 16th century, the English used Clary Sage as a replacement for hop in beer because it promotes feelings of elation.
